WhatsApp has become an important part of life. Earlier, we used to spend hundreds of bucks on message packs to talk non-stop with our loved ones. Now, all we need is an internet connection on the cheapest internet recharge, on which we can share music and video too.
This app can be found on any smartphone, irrespective of OS and build. However, now, things are about to change as WhatsApp’s support will not be available on selected smartphones. The developers of this app will be pulling support for certain mobile operating systems that they think are outdated.
This step is taken to ensure a streamlined WhatsApp experience on all devices it’s installed on. This app is now owned by Facebook, and the developers are trying to roll out new features that may garble the app on old OS systems.
The WhatsApp team often carries out maintenance drives that involves adding and removing support for different smartphones and operating systems. Yet, this time the company will drop support for thousands of smartphones that run old variants of iOS, Android, and Windows Phone OS. The purge will happen on December 31, and will majorly affect old Nokia Lumia devices.
WhatsApp shall pull support for Android 2.3.7 as well. Hence, if you have a phone that runs Android Éclair, you’re in for a disappointment that starts from February 2020.
The lower limit for iPhones is iOS 8, including previous versions. Currently, iPhones with this old operating system have already lost the functionality to create new WhatsApp account.
To clear up what was happening, a WhatsApp spokesperson explained, “This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp.”
Let’s hope the features WhatsApp rolls in the future are worth it since not everyone can afford a phone that supports the latest OS versions.
