Here’s something as astonishing as the speed of mobile screen repairs done by GoEasyRepair. Despite the serious impact of coronavirus on the Chinese mobile market, Huawei has managed to overtake Apple as the world’s second best-selling smartphone manufacturer in 2019. This has been reported by a team of market researchers, including Strategy Analytics, Counterpoint Research, and Canalys.
The Chinese tech giant had shipped more than 240 million phones over the year. Compare this to Apple’s 200 million units, which only accounts for 14.5% of the market share. Samsung is still the king among smartphone manufacturers, shipping a little less than 300 million smartphones in 2019. Xiaomi and Oppo managed to make it to the list as the 4th and 5th best mobile manufacturers.
Huawei’s growth is remarkable, given the hardships this company is facing. While the coronavirus is plummeting Huawei’s smartphone exports at home, USA has banned the brand’s phones from entering their market. Huawei’s performance is surprising, also because they have been barred from preloading Google apps on their new devices.
Huawei’s popularity is limited outside China. According to Counterpoint Research, most of Huawei’s profits can be attributed to 60% sales in mainland China. It has pushed worldwide shipments by 17% between the years 2018 and 2019.
Had there not been any restrictions imposed by USA, things would have been different. Experts from Canalys say that Huawei could have given Samsung a run for its money and grabbed the number one spot. Sadly, coronavirus and global market policies against Chinese goods have pulled down the tech giant. This is not the first time Huawei has surpassed Apple in smartphone sales. Back in 2017, between the months of June and July, Apple was trailing Huawei with a considerably big margin.
If Huawei wants to maintain its position and take on Samsung, it needs to get rid of the ‘alleged’ backdoors in its devices which raise a lot of questions.
