I was wary of Jio, especially since I know the golden rule of life- “Nothing’s for free”. So, when Jio revealed its extremely low tariff rates and free calls to other networks, I wasn’t as excited as my friends were. Call me pessimistic, but I knew the company would eventually change the tariff after everyone got hooked onto it. Don’t get me wrong, the tariff is still attractive since it’s only 6 paise per minute. But the way Jio marketed its network was quite outlandish. In my opinion, they should have refrained from their super-cheap, almost-free label.
Now, the company has launched a new feature that will allow users to answer calls made to their Jio landline on their Jio phones. It can be done through the JioCall app available on the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. You will have to configure your 10-digit Jio fixed line number on the app.
This Jio service is limited to users who have a Jio SIM card or are using the Jio Fiber/JioFi connection. With FixedLine Profile on the JioCall app, users can easily make and receive calls from the smartphones with the added bonus of HD voice and video calling. Moreover, it can be used as an intercom for a residential society connected through a Jio fiber network. The TV can be used to host video calling and hold conference calls as well.
Jio currently offers an internet speed of 100 Mbps for Rs 699 a month as its cheapest plan. Its tariffs go up to Rs 8,499 per month, offering an incredible speed of 1 Gigabits per second.
All of these amazing services give me a feeling that the company introduced them as a means of damage control to slowly discontinue its free SIM, free data, and free call services. Jio could have provided all of these on nominal charges initially rather than giving its humbler customers a mini-stroke. The move was great but it may come at the cost of a large section of Jio’s customers.
